Why the ramp shape works

The first ten weeks add up to $55 — small enough that almost anyone can start. By the time the weekly amount is uncomfortable, the habit is nine weeks old and the visible total makes stopping feel like giving something up. It's the same reason many exercise programs ramp linearly rather than starting hard.

If you'd rather flat-line it

The flat equivalent is $26.50 per week ($1,378 ÷ 52). Same total, no ramp, easier to automate as a standing transfer. Pick the version you'll actually finish.

Where to put the money

A separate savings account beats a jar. The point is that the money is out of easy reach for the whole year; a savings account with a different debit card (or no debit card) is enough friction for most people.

Common questions

Can I run it in reverse?

Yes. Start at $52 and work down to $1. Same total, but the hard weeks are in January when many people also have holiday-shopping recovery to do.

Does it have to start in January?

No. The grid below just tracks 52 weeks — start whenever you want. If you miss a week, catch up next week or skip that number and keep going.
